Survival Horror is a niche genre, but it’s awesome. It pushes your limits and preys on your psyche like nothing else out there. This Steam sale, it’s time to gather whatever strength you have left, and brave through these titles, in case you missed them the first time. It’s not Halloween yet, but that should never be an excuse for you not to be scared shitless. Without further ado:
5. The Evil Within: Rs. 294
Shinji Mikami’s first current-gen foray into the genre he popularize with the original Resident Evil, met with a slight polarizing response. Still there is no doubt that this is an incredible game. We’d even go so far as to call it a masterpiece, and one of the best games this generation. It’s twisted, macabre world and non-stop creativity puts it a league above most titles. The true successor to Resident Evil 4 in our opinion.
4. Dead Space: Rs 166
Speaking of RESI 4, so many games have been inspired by it. Only a few though, have left any sort of individual mark. The now sadly defunct Visceral games debut title for the 7th generation was one of them. It used the overall Event Horizon/ Alien Aesthetic and wrapped it around the RE4 formula. It also added some of the most creative weapon usage in the last 10 years, a shockingly atmospheric game-world in the Ishimura, that forced you into one nerve-wrecking moment after another. Not to mention a cryptic, intriguing, psychologically dense plot that slowly came together. The series is dead now, but this game remains it’s crown jewel, and a 7th gen masterpiece.
3. Condemned: Criminal Origins: Rs 162
This criminally underrated first-person survival horror titles (and its’ sequel) have been forgotten over time for some reason. While the sequel is definitely superior, it was never made available on the PC. So now’s your chance to grab this one and jump into it’s stunningly creepy world, and a mixture of brutal melee combat and investigation sequences. It was a refreshing ahead-of-the curve title that deserved another sequel. So it’s time to show your support by buying this one and sending a message.
2. Alien: Isolation :Rs 212
Isolation is one of the best games attached to the Alien/ Aliens license, and truly brought the terror of Xenomorph to current gen gaming. It’s unique adaptive AI, and immersive sim-y gameplay managed to both make the player think, and shit his / her pants with fear. An uncompromising game from start to finish, it made us feel helpless, trapped and claustrophobic. Just like one of the crew members of the Nostromo from the original film.
1. System Shock 2: Rs 92
Looking Glass and Irrational Game’s 1999 immersive sim classic was one of the birthing points of the FPS/RPG hybrid. It is also however, a survival horror game to its very core. Featuring a horrifying setting in the Von Braun, and some of the most skin-crawling enemy types in any game ever, this game scarred us for life. There isn’t a corner anywhere that ever gives a modicum of relief, resources are limited, and the player needs his / her wits to make it alive. As if all of that wasn’t scary enough, there is also a famous female, malevolent AI lurking around somewhere, intent on making life a living hell for you. And she actually manages to succeed more often than not. Whether or not System Shock 2 is a better game than the original is up for debate, it is however much, much more terrifying. Of that there can be no doubt.
Play these games and put yourself on the on the edge now! Who needs Halloween?
