The modern fighting game scene has been plagued by saturation, microtransactions, terrible business models and a lack of creativity. Which is a shame, but also the perfect excuse for you to look back in time a bit, and experience some of the classics of the genre in all their glory. The steam sale is the perfect occasion for you to binge-purchase some true masterpieces — games that will help you rediscover your love of the genre, or make you a fan if you already weren’t one:
5. King Of Fighters ’98: Ultimate Match Final Edition- Rs. 143/ 4.49$
King of Fighters ’98 is often celebrated as the best entry in the series. And it’s for good reason. When the Orochi saga closed triumphantly with ’97, SNK gave superfans a ‘dream match’ fighting game. One that featured almost every fighter from the ’94-’97, regardless of whether they were killed in the storyline or not. The lack of a story and structure gave SNK the permission to go all out. The ‘Ultimate Match’ adds some extra characters that were left over, offers re-balancing and more bonus content. If you’re an SNK fan, or someone curious about KOF, this is a total no-brainer.
4. Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition- Rs. 141/ 4.99$
The 2011 reboot of MORTAL KOMBAT managed to please fans and newcomers alike, featured a great story mode, and the best fighting engine ever for the series. Not to mention, it was a treasure trove of content that helped sweeten the deal, even if you only wanted to play the game offline. The game and all its DLC is bundled together in the ‘Komplete Edition’ which offers even more content to an already insane package. Now’s your chance to get all of it.
3. Guilty Gear X2 # Reload- Rs. 73/ 1.99$
Guilty Gear is Arc Systemworks’ signature series. While all of it is on sale right now, we prefer X2, as it forms a good entry point for newcomers (or returning old vets). Its flashy, precise and deeply technical fighting system lies somewhere between ‘easy to pick up’ and ‘impossible to master’. Featuring a large cast of beautifully drawn and varied characters, still incredible animation and superb fighting gameplay that relies on a mixture of attack, defense, counter, timing and air game–along with highly intelligent and reactive AI. It’s a gift that gives on giving for fighting game fans.
2. BlazBlue: ChronoPhantasma Extend- Rs. 109/ 4.49$
Speaking of Arc Systemworks, Blazblue is the spiritual successor to Guilty Gear, and the Yin to its Yang. Featuring many similarities, but an overall different coat of paint and vibe, it is also one of the deepest, most rewarding fighters in recent memory. While the entire franchise is under sale, you’re better off getting ‘Chrono Phantasma’. As it’s the updated version of both ‘Calamity Trigger’ and ‘Continum Shift’ (two games also on heavy discount), it has just the right amount of content for people to dig into. Prepare to be amazed by the stunning visual presentation, unique atmosphere and deep, technical gameplay (that is an extension of Guilty Gear) that’s also a lot of fun.
1. Garou: Mark of The Wolves- Rs. 184/ 4.99$
This might just be the single most impressive game SNK has ever put out. Believe us, we wouldn’t make that statement if we didn’t mean it. Launched initially as a chapter in the FATAL FURY series, it flew under the radar. Over time though, its acquired a reputation as an unheralded masterpiece and a true classic. That reputation is every bit well earned. The character animation and sprites still amaze to this day. The gameplay is fast, fluid, deep while being completely accessible. The color palette, vibrancy and charm explodes off the screen. The balance and depth in gameplay is sublime. The soundtrack is next level. There’s a reason Garou is considered so iconic. It offers gamers literally everything they can ever hope for in a game, let alone fighting games. If you haven’t already, get this one ASAP.
Time to put on your fighting gloves and buy all these games. Don’t hesitate! After all, it’s just your parents’ credit card (Or maybe your own?)!
