Good, pure-blooded action games are a dime a dozen, and Furi is definitely up there among the best of the bunch. When it released back in 2016, it became one of my personal favorite games of the generation by virtue of it’s focus in terms of design. Furi is a boss rusher where the normal difficulty is a tutorial for the actual game which is played on the “Furier” (hard) difficulty. I had a ton of fun with the game following it’s rather minimalistic story, tough as balls bosses and heart thumping, Zen inducing gameplay; such a laser focused philosophy is something AAA games can’t manage anymore, and that’s a big accomplishment for an indie studio.
With that being said, The Game Bakers (via Facebook) have revealed some numbers related to the commercial success they have had with Furi so far. Below are the key points followed up with the post itself:
Total copies sold – 700,000 (40% of it coming from Steam)
Downloads from PSPlus in the first month – 2.8 million
On Steam Wishlists – 273,000
We’re often asked to share numbers about Furi.
So here are a few, remember the game launched as PlayStation Plus free game of the month and on Steam in July 2016, released on Xbox later in 2016 and on Switch in 2018. Furi’s first month was at the same time spectacular with over 2.8 million downloads on Playstation and very scary with only 17 000 sales on Steam. Did the free Playstation downloads canibalize the sales? Or did it compensate with the extra visibility? We will never know.
What surprised us with Furi is that it never stopped selling! With the game quality – it was rated for a while 95% by Steam players and is still today at 91% – and the support of the community that the game touched, the game continued selling over the years. We were lucky to have created a game unique enough to become an “Evergreen” title.
This was also helped by the launch for Furi on Switch in 2018, where the game performed really well, of our DLC and our continued support of the game (patches with fixes and new features like the Invincible mode, new languages, …) All in all, in addition to the 2.8 million free downloads, the game sold over 700 000 copies, about 40% of those on Steam.
There are still 273 000 Steam users who have the game in their wishlists today! It’s the right time to buy it
The game’s soundtrack has also come a long way, with over 40 million streams on Spotify only, 45 million on Youtube. What a journey!
The Game Bakers have also announced Furi’s biggest sale to date. Furi is now available on an all-time low and is on sale on Steam (75%), the Switch e-shop (65%), GOG (75%) and other stores. I wish them the best of luck with their next game “Haven” and hope it succeeds critically and commercially, all the while waiting for another action masterpiece that will quench the thirst left behind by Furi.
