It’s a big week for Star Wars fans with ‘Jedi: Fallen Order’ and the trailer for ‘Episode IX’ hitting collectively. Personally, though, I’m only excited for ‘Fallen Order’. While there’s no telling what Disney has cooked up in Episode IX, there’s a lot to be hopeful for Respawn’s upcoming single-player (gasp) Star Wars adventure. With those amazing production values, and the polish and dedication Respawn usually brings to the table in their products, this could very well be the next big STAR WARS game. Here are some of our hopes and expectations regarding it:
- It’s more ‘JEDI KNIGHT’ and less ‘FORCE UNLEASHED’: The old Jedi Knight games that featured the adventures of Kyle Katarn, namely Dark Forces, Dark Forces II, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy are all gems that have become less significant over time. This is a shame as they were very innovative action games that juggled both first-person and third-person perspectives briliantly–and were the first games to properly nail lightsaber combat, alongside having memorable characters and stories. These games were far superior products than the numbing, overrated and repetitive Force Unleashed games– which were all surface, and unfortunately what fans remember these days when it comes to games featuring Jedi Knights. While the JEDI KNIGHT games are now canon after Disney’s acquisition of Lucasfilm, here’s hoping that the new game carries over some of that old DNA and Star Wars magic.
- It brings some storytelling balance (to the force): STAR WARS has been experiencing a dearth of good storytelling recently. The new films have not been up to the mark, the expanded universe is no more, and both KOTOR and JEDI KNIGHT games were a long time ago. Fans need the cheer, and to believe again. The fact that Chris Avellone is involved, seems like a sign from above. After all, his writing is what gave KOTOR 2 a lot of thematic depth above its predecessor, as fans say. While I prefer KOTOR 1 by a long margin, it dosen’t really matter. He’s an industry icon with impeccable credentials, and writing chops that most of us could only dream of. If he’s on board, there’s little doubt that an epic tale is going to be weaved.
- It exorcises the ghosts of previous canceled STAR WARS games: Both STAR WARS 1313 and the ‘canceled’ STAR WARS game from Amy Henning promised great things. Unfortunately, both games were canceled. Fans are still waiting for that amazing, single-player AAA Star Wars adventure that will make use of all the technological resources available to current technology—and it has not come so far. Here’s hoping that this one delivers where it’s supposed to and makes fans’ jaws drop.
- It helps Respawn studios grow: Despite being under the umbrella of EA, Respawn studios are the good guys. They made one of the best AAA shooters in terms of t overall package in TITANFALL 2, and released the most polished BR game in APEX LEGENDS for free. Somehow they’re managed to hold their own despite being under the clutches of the one of the worst, most evil publishers in existence. It may have to do with the clout that studio founder Vince Zampenella carries (with him being one of the masterminds behind the MODERN WARFARE series), but it seems to have been working. The TITANFALL series, especially 2 (Despite being excellent), perhaps got less than it deserved. However, we’re hoping this game, with one of the most iconic brand names ever attached to it, hits the ace in the hole.
